What Part Is Mine? The Most Powerful Question for Personal Growth | LifeCoachATL

Most people spend a lot of time trying to figure out who's at fault.

My boss.

My spouse.

My parents.

My childhood.

My coworkers.

The economy.

Life.

Sometimes those things absolutely play a role.

But I've found that asking who's to blame rarely creates meaningful change.

There's a different question I ask clients.

One that's far more uncomfortable.

And far more powerful.

"What part is mine?"

The most powerful question you'll ever ask yourself isn't "Who's to blame?" It's "What part is mine?"
The most powerful question you'll ever ask yourself isn't "Who's to blame?" It's "What part is mine?"

Why This Question Changes Everything

When something isn't going the way we hoped, it's natural to focus on everything outside of our control.

What someone else said.

What someone else did.

How someone else responded.

The problem is that we can't change any of those things.

The moment we shift our attention to our part, something changes.

We move from helplessness to ownership.

Ownership doesn't mean blaming yourself for everything.

It means recognizing where your influence begins.

Ownership Isn't Self-Blame

This is where many people get stuck.

They hear the word "ownership" and assume it means accepting responsibility for everything.

It doesn't.

If someone lies to you, that's theirs.

If someone breaks a promise, that's theirs.

If someone treats you unfairly, that's theirs.

But...

Did you ignore the red flags?

Did you avoid the difficult conversation?

Did you stay long after you knew something wasn't healthy?

That part might be yours.

Ownership isn't carrying someone else's actions.

It's being honest about your own.

The Question I Hear Most Often

People come to coaching wanting answers.

How do I become more confident?

How do I stop procrastinating?

How do I improve my relationships?

Those are important questions.

But before we answer them, we usually have to answer another one.

"What part is mine?"

Because until you can answer that honestly, change becomes much harder.

This Question Creates Freedom

One of the greatest gifts of ownership is that it gives your power back.

If everything is someone else's fault...

Your future depends on them changing.

If you can identify your part...

Your future depends on the choices you make next.

That's incredibly freeing.

Not because it's easy.

Because it's actionable.

Try It This Week

The next time something frustrates you, pause before pointing outward.

Ask yourself:

What part is mine?

Maybe it's the boundary you never communicated.

Maybe it's the conversation you've been avoiding.

Maybe it's the expectation you never shared.

Maybe it's realizing you've been waiting for someone else to solve a problem that's yours to address.

You may not control everything that happens to you.

But you always have influence over how you respond.

And that's where growth begins.

This Is the Work I Do

I help capable people stop getting stuck in blame, build greater self-awareness, and take ownership of the parts of their lives they can actually change.

Because the most powerful question isn't, "Who's responsible?"

It's,

"What part is mine?"
